Dreaming of cats may mean many different things.  If you’ve dreamed of a cat, you might be wondering if it’s an omen of good or bad luck, or perhaps may mean something magical.  Cats are creatures who we deeply associate with luck and magic.  Whether or not dreaming of a cat signifies good or bad fortune, it is important to remember that you’re the sole authority on the interpretation of your dream.

Good and bad omens in dreams are always for our benefit

Cats in dreams may be omens of good or bad fortune, but that doesn’t mean the dream is good or bad.  An omen of bad fortune may be as beneficial as a good omen when you open yourself up to the messages of your dream.  Dreams are messages from our higher self, the earth, and the source of creativity in our life.  Dreams are sent for our benefit to inspire insight, healing, or transformation.  In this way, dreaming of a cat as an omen of bad luck, for instance, can be beneficial.

Cats as a symbol of luck in dreams

Cats are creatures deeply associated with luck and superstition.  You might feel that seeing a black path cross your pass is bad luck.  Or you might be reminded of the notion that cats have nine lives.  In any case, cats are a symbol of destiny and fortune.  Dreaming of a cat might be an invitation to relate in a new way with luck, destiny, or fortune.  Where in your life do you feel lucky or unlucky?

Every image in our dreams somehow reflects ourselves or our deeper thoughts because dreams are messages from our higher self.  When you dream of a cat as a symbol of luck or fortune, then you may be invited to be your own omen for luck.  In some way, you can be for yourself that omen of fortune you see in the cat.

Dreaming of cats as an omen of bad fortune

If you’ve dreamed of a cat as an omen of bad fortune, look to your own intuition.  Your feelings might be communicating with you.  Consider how you’ve paid attention to your own intuition.  Is there anywhere that your feelings are saying your path will lead to bad fortune.  Perhaps you’re ignoring your intuition of ill luck and so these feelings are presenting themselves as an omen in your dreams.  What would it feel like to take action on your own intuition?

Dreaming of cats as an omen of good fortune

If you’ve dreamed of a cat as an omen of good fortune, look to your own intuition.  Consider if there’s a place in your life where you know you’ll have success and good luck.  Are you acting with the faith that luck is on your side?  When we ignore our feelings and intuition, our higher self often communicates through our dreams.

Cats as symbols for magic in dreams

Cats are associated with magic and psychic activities, for example, through the image of a witch and her cat as a familiar who helps her in her magical deeds.  People sometimes say that cats can see ghosts and other otherworldly things, like when they look at things that we can’t see.  You may be reminded of the ancient Egyptian’s reverence for the cat.  In some way, our collective imagination sees cats as beings that live in two worlds, our physical world and then the world of ghosts, witches, and magic.

Dreaming of a cat might be an invitation to open to magic in your life.  Consider how the cat appeared in your dreams.  If you feel positive, curious, or attracted to the cat, then you may be invited to bring magic deeper into your life or else to open to the otherworld.  Magic can show up in our lives through at least a few ways: intuition, experience, and action.

Cats symbolize your intuition

If you’ve dreamed of a cat as a symbol for magic, you might be invited to nurture your own intuition as if you’d nurture a beloved cat.  Intuition is mysterious and doesn’t listen to commands, just like a cat.  You can’t command a cat to come, but you can be open to it and loving when the cat visits, and so it may visit more and more.  In fact, it may come and purr on your lap, which is proven to calm and heal our bodies. How would it feel to nurture your intuition in the same way you’d nurture a beloved cat?

Cats as otherworldly creatures

The magical and mysterious aspects of our world can be experienced.  We often imagine that a cat sees the otherworld, a ghost, or some such thing when it focuses on something we can’t see.  Dreaming of a cat might be an invitation to open your magical and otherworldly senses.  Everyone has access to their own intuition, which feels at times like magic.  How would it feel to open up to your intuition with faith, just like focusing on the unseen thing?

Cats in dreams as messengers of the dead

Cats are associated with the dead and the realms of the dead.  They fit in well with the halloween imagery of ghosts, skeletons, and witches.  Cats appear in halloween imagery often as a black cat, arched in defense or warning of some otherworldly creature.  The image of the arched black cat tells us that something otherworldly and, perhaps, from the realm of the dead is here.

When you dream of a cat as a symbol for the realm of death, you are invited to open yourself to the possibility of connection with that realm.  No matter what your belief system, if you dream of a cat as a messenger of the afterlife, consider your relationship with death and those who have died.

Dreaming of a cat might mean you have unfinished business with the realm of the dead.  Perhaps one of your relations died and you have unresolved issues with them, your dream of the cat might be an invitation to resolve those issues.

Dreaming of a cat might mean someone you know who died has a message for you.  Consider the actions of the cat in the dream and your feelings, there will be clues about the message.  You are invited to open yourself up to messages from ancestors or relations.

You can always incubate another dream for more clarity.  To incubate the dream, simply repeat an intention throughout the day and before you sleep, such as, “tonight I will dream a dream that provides clarity about any message I may have from those who have gone before.  I ask for a dream of clarity that will serve my highest good, according to the principles of non-harm.  I will remember and record my dream and have faith that whatever I experience is the exact message of clarity that I need.”

Cats and witches

Cats are associated with witches.  We often imagine witches as ugly hags who live on the edge of town and often send curses to take advantage of innocents.  While the imagery of the witch as an evil old woman was used by the medieval church to consolidate power in patriarchal priests for the purposes of exploitation, the imagery still survives in our collective imagination and must be considered.

You are now invited to consider how the power structures of organized religion and political empire have vilified women and men who have only our healing and benefit in heart.  Witches and witchcraft are not evil in themselves.  Every human has innate access to the magic of their intuition and can experience insight, healing, and transformation that the empires of modern science and religion would deem either impossible or evil.

When you dream of a witch’s cat, you are invited to reconnect with the magical part of yourself that has the capacity to influence fate and inspire healing. Imagine what it’d feel like to allow yourself to believe in magic and know that you are capable of it.  Imagine what it’d feel like to know that you can experience magical insight, healing, or transformation.

Cats in dreams as a warning of curses

Dreaming of cats may be a very real omen of magic or the effect of witches in your life

Your feelings provide clues to the meaning of cats in your dreams.  You might feel negative, scared, invaded, or in some other way harmed by the image of a cat in your dream.  If you’ve dreamed of a cat as an omen of harmful magic, you may be being warned about harmful magic in your life, either metaphorical or literal sense.

Dreaming of cats as an omen for metaphorical harmful magic invites you to consider where you might feel cursed in your life.  Maybe you’re failing to find love, success, or some satisfaction of some other desire.  Consider what you’re allowing yourself to be cursed. Pay attention to your inner voice, are the times where your inner voice is critical or full of self hatred?

In some cases, cats might be a symbol of literal magic.  Although ghosts and curses are impossible to prove using objective science, we can listen to the overwhelming evidence of subjective experience that magical events do happen.  Most people have an experience of something like a ghost or some other magic or otherworldly phenomenon.  The fact that we can’t objectively prove these experiences doesn’t mean they don’t happen.  You can have magical, otherworldly, or spiritual experiences without being able to explain their causes.

Cats in your dreams might mean that the otherworld is reaching out to you in some way.  Your dream of a cat might be a warning that you are being cursed because our collective imagination associates cats with evil witches.  Imagine what it’d feel like to be free of anywhere that you might feel cursed.

How to lift or break a curse after dreaming of a cat

While there are many ways to deal with feeling cursed and to break a magical curse, you are the ultimate power by which the curses may be lifted.  The best way to lift a curse is through consciousness and will.  Pay attention to how and where your life energy is being misdirected or misused.  Make a decision to use your life force for your life.  You live your life in service to others, for the benefit of yourself and all your relations, and so you need all your life force to be aligned with your love and life motivation.  Speak aloud your decision to call back your life force, to not let your life force be misdirected, and to live your life for the benefit of yourself and relations.

Sometimes, when we feel cursed, we might use the help of others who have our good as their intent and can support us according to the principle of non-harm.  If you’re dreaming of a cat as a warning of being cursed, then you may be invited to call on the support of a good witch or someone who can support you in lifting the feeling of being cursed.  Look to your dream for clues, then look around in your life, you likely are connected with someone who can help.

Cats have strong boundaries

Cats are creatures with strong boundaries.  Anyone who has spent any time with a cat knows that it isn’t doing anything for you.  It doesn’t care if it hurts your feelings when it rejects you by not cuddling when you want.  Cats only cuddle with you or accept your affection when they want.  Imagine what it’d be like to live like a cat.  How would it feel to do what you like without worrying about what others think of you?

When you dream of cats as symbols for strong boundaries, you are invited to consider your own boundaries.  Are your boundaries too strong or weak?  Where are you living your life out of alignment with yourself and desires because you’re thinking about what others might think of you?

Cats are niche predators

Cats are apex predators within their own niche.  A house cat might be the king of the backyard and basement.  A lion is the king of all animals.  If you dream of a cat, you might be invited to consider your own niche.  How would it feel to dominate your domain?

Dreaming of cats purring

The purring of cats can calm and heal bodies.  It inspires us with a feeling of calm and presence.  When you dream of a cat purring, you may be invited to be present in your life.  What would it feel like to know that you can relax and heal just by being present and doing nothing?

Cats in dreams could symbolize magic, luck, healing, being in nature, or many other things depending on context.  Cats are often associated with luck through superstition and magic through their connection with witches.
